Coaching philosophy
Outcome Aware. Process Focused
The human has and will forever be at the center of my coaching philosophy. I operate and coach to elevate the person. Creating an environment that is challenging yet supportive, nudging specific areas, with the intention of developing them to positively affect match day, and our team's season.

My role:
-
Take the complex & seemingly chaotic game.
-
Design an enjoyable & challenging environment, which is representative of the game and transfers successfully to match days.
-
Provide appropriate physical & mental periodization.
-
Equip the goalkeeper with a well-stocked toolbox of strategies and approaches to be consistently successful.

I thoughtfully and intentionally design a challenging, captivating and safe training environment. It is 2024, and thus find ways to incorporate technology to reinforce & enhance; a memorable language that underpins concepts & team principles so that in the heat of battle we are aligned; and timely curated & delivered film to inform and nudge performances to be of the highest caliber. I do this with the intention of creating an engaging and memorable work environment.

In 2021 at Gotham, and 2022 and 2023 at Angel City respectively, 3 goalkeepers played in competitive games. This is against the league mean, and only in one instance was it due to injury. It was because they had developed on the training field, and were ready to contribute to the team's success under the bright lights and watching eyes of an NWSL gameday.

It is not lost on me that as coaches we develop people to affect training, games, the wider soccer world, and the world generally. I am proud of our training environments and all the goalkeepers that have worked in them.

Goalkeeping Methodology
HIGH REALISM
It is rare you’ll see a cone in one of my sessions. Instead, I aim to provide structure using dummies, maybe the occasional pole, as well as clearly articulated and presented concepts & appropriate environmental constraints.

HIGH CHALLENGE
Excelling consistently in front of 22,000 is the objective. The mental and physical demands of gameday for a goalkeeper are incredibly difficult to replicate in training. I have however found that high challenge & equally as high support in the daily environment has potential for remarkable results. Operating in a dynamic training environment in which the ball is rolling stretches bandwidth, enhances decision-making, and provides challenges to our tactical understanding. Bridging the gap and transferring to positive performances on gameday.

EMPHASIS ON IN-POSSESSION
Having a goalkeeper that oozes comfort and ability in-possession can be of huge benefit to a team. So, having the ball rolling as much as possible in the session serves two purposes:
-
It promotes a space to explore and develop a broad range of passing to meet the team tactical model.
-
When the ball is rolling it is constantly challenging our out-of-possession positional principles, in-possession tactical understanding, and encountering these more often in the training environment, will likely increase transferability
SAFE TO EXPLORE
If you have reached this point on the site, I dearly hope that you've realized that continued development is a key component of my philosophy.
I have come to learn that there is no reason why a seasoned pro can't continue to develop, as much as a freshman in college. I have worked with World cup winners & Olympic gold medalists that I watched grow dramatically from day 1 to day 300. This is accelerated when the group feels that it is safe to explore new technical & tactical approaches, both in isolated goalkeeper sessions and when they join the team.

It is my intention that training will be the space to venture into the technical & tactical unknown! Experiment and explore.
